Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is the most protected ecological piece of Annamalai sub unit of Western Ghats. It is surrounded on all sides by protected areas and sanctuaries of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is endowed with a peninsular flora and fauna which are excellently conserved due to total protection and minimal human interference. Valparai is a mid-elevation hill station with tea plantations surrounded by evergreen forest. The scenic drive to the town from Pollachi passes through a sanctuary noted for leopards, elephants, boars, lion-tailed macaques, gaur, spotted deer, sambar, and Giant Squirrels. The area is also rich in birds, including the Great Hornbill. The Valparai range is also habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr, an endemic wild goat, largely confined to altitudes from 1200 to 2600m in the southern Western Ghats.
